SEASIDE HEIGHTS, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — The owners of the iconic Seaside Heights amusement pier on the Jersey Shore have received state approval to rebuild a portion of the site, nearly three years after it was devastated by Superstorm Sandy.

The Coastal Area Facilities Review Act permit granted to owners of the Casino Pier in Seaside Heights also allows them to relocate their Sky Ride cable car attraction.

The Asbury Park Press reported the permit was issued by the state Department of Environmental Protection. It allows the pier’s owners to rebuild a 225-foot by 266-foot section of the pier and move the Sky Ride 160 feet to the north of its current location.

The pier is where the Jet Star roller coaster plunged into the ocean when Sandy hit on Oct. 29, 2012, becoming one of the most enduring images of the storm.

A fire also destroyed much of the nearby boardwalk in Seaside Heights and neighboring Seaside Park in September 2013.
